Importing content

To help you migrate to Masthead, content can be imported in two different ways. You can either import an entire Hugo site or import individual Markdown and HTML files.

Importing a Hugo site

Masthead imports the content of your Hugo site, not its presentation. Posts, pages and uploads are imported, while the Hugo theme itself is intentionally ignored.

Supported frontmatter is preserved where possible, including titles and draft status. Once imported, your content can be rendered by any Masthead theme.

To import a Hugo site:

1. Create a .zip archive of your Hugo project.
2. Open your site’s Settings page.
3. Click Import site.
4. Upload the archive and complete the import wizard.

After the import has finished, your posts, pages and uploads are immediately available. Simply choose a Masthead theme and continue editing your site as usual.

Importing individual files

If you don’t want to migrate an entire website, Masthead also supports importing individual Markdown and HTML files. This is useful when moving a small number of pages or posts, or when content has been written outside of Masthead.

Markdown frontmatter is supported and imported automatically where applicable.

To import one or more files:

1. Open the Posts or Pages overview.
2. Click Import.
3. Select one or more Markdown or HTML files.
4. Masthead imports the files and makes them immediately available for editing.

Whether you import a complete Hugo site or a handful of individual files, Masthead keeps the focus on your content. Once imported, it can be edited, published and rendered by any compatible theme.
